Sibelius alkoi säveltämään Satua Wienissä vuonna 1891 ja hahmotteli siitä ensin nonettoa eli kamariversiota yhdeksälle soittajalle.  Hän päätyi kuitenkin lopulta orkesteriversioon, jonka viimeisteli häämatkallaan Lieksassa. Tämän Sibeliuksen alkuperäiseen ajatukseen nojautuvan kamariversion esittävät konsertissa Joensuun kaupunginorkesterin muusikot kapellimestari Arturo Alvaradon johdolla.

Mezzosopraano Annastiina Tahkola tulkitsee konsertissa kaksi laulua, jotka Sibelius sävelsi J. L Runebergin teksteihin häämatkallaan Pielisen rannalla, Kyssens hopp ja Till Frigga. Tahkola voitti ensimmäiset kansainväliset Sibelius-laulukilpailut vuonna 2007. Baritoni Esa Ruuttunen tulkitsee puolestaan konsertissa Kullervon valituksen Sibeliuksen Kullervosta. Sibelius oli hyvin kiinnostunut Kalevalasta jo koulupoikana Hämeenlinnassa ja hän sävelsi Kullervon tarinasta ensimmäisen suurimuotoisen sinfonisen sävellyksen, jonka ensiesityksen menestys keväällä 1892 siivitti hänet avioliittoon Aino Järnefeltin kanssa! Kiinnostus Kalevalaa ja Karjalaa kohtaan vei nuoren parin häämatkalle Lieksaan ja Karjalaan. Matkaa varten Sibelius oli saanut Helsingin yliopistolta matka-apurahaa 400 markkaa.

Konsertissa kuullaan myös Sibeliuksen Karelia-sarja Jussi Makkosen, pianisti Nazig Azezian ja viulisti Susanna Mieskonen-Makkonen tulkintana. Sibelius sävelsi sarjan pian Karjalan matkansa jälkeen. Teoksen on sovittanut kamariyhtyeelle Matti Makkonen. Konsertin jälkeen on mahdollisuus nauttia illallisesta ja Monola-jatkoista Timitran linnan rantaravintolassa.

Jussi Makkosen suositut klassisen musiikin koulukonsertit ovat ylittäneet 1000 konsertin rajan. Jussin Sibelius- ja Oskar Merikanto -aiheiset koulukonsertit ovat jatkuneet vuodesta 2010 ja ovat saaneet tähän mennessä yli 250 000 kuulijaa Suomessa.  Sibeliuksen juhlavuoden aikana Jussi tulee konsertoimaan kaikkiaan 300 konsertin verran Suomessa, Norjassa, Saksassa ja Yhdysvalloissa. Hän konsertoi alkuvuonna Yhdysvalloissa Washingtonin ja Oregonin osavaltioissa koulu- ja yleisökonserteissa yhdessä Sibeliuksen lapsenlapsen lapsenlapsen, pianisti Ruusamari Tepon kanssa.
